Fought on August 6, 1777, the Battle of Oriskany represents one of the bloodiest battles, and most significant turning points, of the Revolutionary War. An 85-foot stone obelisk now stands as a memorial to the patriot militia and Oneida warriors who fought in the battle. The monument was dedicated in 1884. The pedestal is granite, sourced from Maine, and the upper portion is limestone from the Mohawk Valley and Onondaga County—the masonry of both parts was the work of Alexander Pirnie, of Remsen.

Tucked away in the scenic "North Country" town of Remsen, the Steuben Memorial State Historic Site honors Baron von Steuben, a Prussian-born military officer whose expert training was vital in transforming George Washington’s starving, ill-trained army into a professional fighting force at Valley Forge. In gratitude for his service, New York State granted Steuben a 16,000-acre land parcel where he spent his final years as a "gentleman farmer". Today, visitors can explore a faithful replica of his two-room log cabin and pay their respects at his final resting place, the "Sacred Grove," which is marked by a historic stone monument dedicated in 1870.
