Fort Stanwix National Monument
Fort Stanwix
Established in 1935 and reconstructed for the 1976 Bicentennial, Fort Stanwix National Monument is a full-scale replica of the 18th-century "Fort That Never Surrendered." Located in the heart of Rome, NY, the park commemorates the strategic defense of the "Oneida Carry" during the Revolutionary War and the complex history of the Six Nations Confederacy.
- The Reconstructed Fort: A meticulous earth-and-timber-clad reconstruction based on original 1758 British plans and 1970s archaeological investigations.
- Marinus Willett Visitor Center: Explore centuries of history through interpretive exhibits, films, and a collection of nearly 500,000 artifacts unearthed on-site.
- Living History: Engage with Park Rangers who provide demonstrations, history lectures, and guided tours of the barracks and officers' quarters.
- Natural Trails: Walk three short trails, including a portion of the historic Oneida Carry, a vital six-mile portage that once connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.
