The Copper City

Rome is the perfect place to spend a weekend immersed in history, nature, and culture. Rome is home to Revere Copper, hence the nod and notoriety as being The Copper City.

Adults and children alike will enjoy the various activities available in this historic city, home to two National Parks. Rome’s history began with the building of a fortified trading post on one of the most important North American transportation routes, the Oneida Carry. Located in Iroquois territory, Fort Stanwix was erected in 1758 to protect traders during the French and Indian War and hosted the Continental Army during the Revolution.

Known as “the fort that never surrendered” for repelling a prolonged siege in 1777, today visitors can see, touch, and feel this significant piece of American’s Revolutionary history at Fort Stanwix National Monument. Just six miles away, the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of one of the Revolutionary War’s most deadly and pivotal engagements. Rome highlights its patriotic pride and celebrates the USA with the annual Honor America Days event in July including a patriotic parade, family events and a symphony concert on the lawn at Fort Stanwix with a majestic fireworks display.

Rome is the historic location of the original dig to start the legendary Erie Canal in 1817. Recognized as the catalyst for the expansion and growth of America and an engineering marvel the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor continues to transform upstate New York’s economy. The Erie Canalway Trail is now part of New York’s 750-mile Empire State Trail, the largest connected trail system in the US. In August the city celebrates with Rome Canalfest at Bellamy Harbor Park along the banks of the canal—with rides, music, fireworks, and a unique 5K run & 2K kayak event

Take a break at Copper City Brewing Company with a wide variety of craft beer, 11 on tap, and delicious New York State ciders and wines carefully selected from around the state for your enjoyment. Nature lovers will enjoy Delta Lake State Park for camping, hiking and watersports. Learn how millions of trout are raised at the nearby Rome Fish Hatchery. The trails and unique geographic formations at the Rome Sand Plains represent one of only a few inland pine barrens in the nation, teaming with watchable wildlife. Cyclists will enjoy the Mohawk River Trail and everyone will make memories at Fort Rickey Children’s Discovery Zoo where families can experience a wide variety of animal encounters including a special exhibition of magnificent North American Gray Wolves.
