October Events in Oneida County

Organized into five categories:
Spooky, Family-Friendly, Arts/Culture/Music, Food & Beverage and Community/Feel-Good

What does fall mean to you? For us, it’s pumpkin-picking, apple cider donut-eating, wine-sipping, beer-drinking and just about everything else in between. As we start making our fall plans, we noticed that there are A LOT of events in October. Because of this, we created a breakdown of events by category and date. The categories are: Spooky, Family-Friendly, Arts/Culture/Music, Food/Beverage & Community Feel Good/Fundraisers. Keep in mind that some events may fit into more than one category!

Spooky

-10/4-11/2 - CAYO Industrial Horror Realm (Rome) – Cayo has a brand new home located under the illuminated Rome water tower beacon. This spooky attraction is open Friday-Sunday each weekend in October as well as on Halloween. Guests will be immersed into a live production complete with intense theatrics and interactive puzzles. Visitors can choose which of the five themed attractions on site they visit. Cost is $25 per person, cash only and ATM on sight. Kids allowed only under adult supervision.cayo1

-10/12Zombie Assault at Check Six Paintball Fields & Pro Shop (Rome). No field fees, no rental fees, buy paint and have fun! There are four-game formats, played twice each. Ward off the zombies but don’t lose your head in doing so!

-10/13-14 - Haunted Forest hosted by Papa Rick’s Snack Shack (Rome). Celebrate their last couple days of the season at Papa Rick’s. There will be a haunted trail through the trees with live ghosts and goblins to spook you along the way. Admission is $2 for the walk. There will also be ice cream specials. Any kids who show up in costume will receive a special Halloween goodie bag!

-10/18Utica Zombie Walk at Uptown Theatre (Utica) – The Utica Zombie Walk celebrates their 10th year and will take place at the iconic Uptown Theatre. Admission is free but please bring one non-perishable pet food or care item for the Stevens-Swan Human Society. Events kick off at 5pm and don’t forget to come in costume. There will be music, snacks and then a zombie walk. Following the walk is an undead after-party at the Uptown for 21+.

Family-Friendly

-Peterpaul’s Pumpkin Palooza (Rome) – Every Friday-Sunday during October. Trick-or-treat village, kids can come dressed in costume and visit stations and carnival games for candy and prizes. Hayrides (Fri & Sat) available for additional price.

-Fall Fun Fest at Fort Rickey – Fridays and Saturdays in October. Bring the kids for pumpkin painting, hay maze, pony and tractor pull rides, arts and crafts, live music, good eats and treats. Admission is $7 per person.mmbareiss Instagram 1954 ig 1628655720135409765 41555543

-10/5-6Apple Fest (Sauquoit) -  Bring the whole family and enjoy hay rides, corn maze, bounce house and more! Sweet treats available such as apple cider, and donuts. There’s even an apple press! Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children 12 & under. Food from Tony’s in Clinton!

-10/11-122019 Halloween House at Rome Art and Community Center (Rome) – Bring the kids for a haunted mansion, imagination station, trick-or-treat street, not-so-scary trail plus food and beverages! Activities for all ages - $3-$6 per activity.

-10/12Boolermaker at the Utica Zoo (Utica) – This is a Halloween themed fun run that is 100% free as part of the Boilermaker’s community outreach programming. The event is to show our youth that getting fit isn’t scary. There are distances for all ages and abilities between ages 4-12. Pre-registration is required and kids will get a runner gift bag and zoo admission for one child and one adult!

-10/12 & 10/22 - Pumpkin Decorating at Utica Public Library –- Bring the kids (ages 4-12) to decorate a pumpkin to bring home!

-10/132nd Annual Falling for Utica Festival at Handshake.City (Utica) – Enjoy this autumn event that has something for the whole family. Pumpkin carving demos, live music, magic, Utica Coffee sack races, stein holding competition, apple cider donut eating contest for kids and adults, food trucks, Copper City and a vendor marketplace! Event is free.

-10/13Hocus Pocus Movie Night at Wood Creek Hollow (Rome) – The all-time family favorite; Disney’s Hocus Pocus will be showing at this outdoor event (weather dependent). Dean’s Concession Stand will be open for refreshments. Bring a blanket or chair!

-10/18-19Haunted Mansion Tours at 1 Rutger Park (Utica) – Join the Landmarks Society as they scare, spook and scream their way through #1 Rutger Park Mansion. This spooky haunted house is themed around John Munn and his family. There will be plot twists and turns. Tickets are $15 and includes the tour, a reception and entertainment.

-10/19-20 - Spooktacular Harvest Festival at the Utica Zoo – Bring the whole family for a weekend of fall fund and spooky good times. Live music, fall favorite treats, food trucks, trick-or-treating, games and activities, pumpkin painting contest & of course over 200 animals! There will also be a costume parade and pumpkin contest, plus dance performances, hula hoopers, comedy magic, photobooth and more.

-10/26Monster Mash at the Utica Public Library (Utica) – Monster stories, fingerplays and crafts for kids ages 3-6. Please register to attend!

-10/26Minute to Win It Halloween Edition at Utica Public Library – Compete in a variety of Halloween themed challenges… if you dare! For kids ages 5-15.

-10/26Fall Fest at Sangertown Square Mall – Fall Fest will include a variety of fall activities for families including pumpkin painting, a Halloween costume contest, games, pie eating contest, face painting and more!

-10/27Unity Hall-oween (Barneveld) – A free Halloween party for kids, complete with pumpkin carving, refreshments, songs and stories from Gary Van Slyke. All children must be accompanied by an adult!

-10/25-26Fairy Tales After Dark at Exit 33 Turning Stone (Verona) – 21+, glitz, glamor and ghouls! Enter at your own risk for a night of fairy tales with a spooky twist. Costume contest at Tin Rooster, entertainment at each bar at Exit 33. Admission is $40 for all venues or buy separately!

Arts, culture & music

-10/2Carole King Live at Montreux 1973 at Unity Hall (Barneveld) – This remastered film is free to visitors and refreshments will be available. This event is the 2019 finale of John Stewart’s Classic Rock Film Series.

-10/5Sal Valentinetti at The Stanley (Utica) – Don’t miss Sal (known from America’s Got Talent) at The Stanley. Sal’s style is heavily influenced by his grandmother who loved musicians like Dean Martin, Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra. 

-10/5Nigerian Independence Party (Utica) – Celebrate unity and diversity at this green, white and green affair! There will be tribal face painting, henna, DIY beads, Nigerian delicacies, history of Nigeria, dance and exhibitions. This is a family-friendly event!

-10/5Ritz & Ragtime at Rutger Park (Utica) – Join the Landmarks Society at the swankiest party in town. Prohibition is in full swing in Utica but this party has you covered. Enjoy a night of friends, fun and frivolity with music, dancing and drinks. Dress to impress! The event will include entertainment, passed and stationary hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and more. All proceeds benefit the Landmarks Society.

-10/9Fall Planting Party: Succulent Pumpkins at Greenscapes Garden Center (Whitesboro) – Tickets are $25 per person and includes a pumpkin planter, succulents and soil. Enjoy fall-themed refreshments, plus a take-home mason jar glass. Join for a fun fall night in the greenhouse!

-10/15-16Jimmy Buffet’s Escape to Margaritaville at The Stanley – Set your mind on island time. This is a musical comedy featuring both original songs and your most-loved Jimmy Buffet classics. 

-10/19Inktober; Pen & Ink Drawing with Retro Sorrento at MWPAI (Utica) – Learn the art of pen and ink drawing from the artist who illustrates labels for Saranac Brewery! Multiple techniques taught, supplies provided.

-10/19Dust Devil Band/Syd Pinto & Paul Case at Unity Hall (Barneveld) – Dust Devil Band returns for this annual benefit concert. Tickets are $15.

-10/19Stryper at Turning Stone (Verona) – Stryper is performing at The Showroom at Turning Stone. Tickets start at $49.50.

-10/19Halloween Cabaret at Players of Utica – Join at the Players Theatre for a night of song and fun featuring some of the most talented performers in the area. Directed by Bonnie Hibbard.

-10/25The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra at Rome Capitol (Rome) – With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered one of the greatest bands of all time. They formed in 1956 and have been touring since! This 19-piece ensemble plays original swing arrangements from the 30s and 40s. Tickets are $22 for adults.

-10/25Roaring 20s Murder Mystery Dinner at Delta Lake Inn (Rome) – Step back into the Roaring Twenties as local radio personality Nevelle Haspin invites you to the broadcast of a gala reception for a silent film diva. Be careful… these celebrities autograph with poisoned pens! $50 per person includes buffet dinner, show, tax and gratuity!

-10/26Wicca and Witchcraft in CNY at Oneida County History Center (Utica) – This free event focuses on the concept that magic is inherent in all humans and cultures. There are concepts of is a discussion that explores centuries of local tales and traditions regarding intuition, wives tales, superstitions an more.

-10/26Jamie Laval Live at Unity Hall – Join for an exciting musical journey through the Scottish Highlands and remote Hebridean Isles. Jamie has earned national recognition for his outstanding Scottish fiddle-playing and his enthralling live performances.

Food and Beverage

-10/5Locktoberfest (Rome) – This event happens at Bellamy Harbor Park in Rome and is annual fall celebration in the city of Rome. There will be live music from Our Common Roots, food trucks, beer and wine served by Copper City, vendors, art, horse rides, inflatable rock wall and more family fun!

-10/5Exit 33 Oktoberfest at Turning Stone (Verona) – Happening in Exit 33’s Atrium, enjoy beer and cider tastings from 7-10pm with several fall beer options!

-10/6Harpoon-OVER-Fest at Harpoon Eddie’s (Sylvan Beach) – Head to Harpoon Eddie’s for Oktoberfest. Join as they send off summer with beer specials and beer tastings, food specials and music from The Beadle Brothers.

-10/11Brew at the Zoo at Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo (Rome) – Check out what’s new at Fort Rickey and enjoy this fall event presented by Copper City Brewing Co. Featuring special animal presentations, delicious food, exciting brews and live music. Admission $35 per person.

10/12 - CNY Cheese Trail Fall Open House - Come experience and learn about our new CNY Cheese Trail! In Oneida County, Stoltzfus Family Dairy & Adirondack Cheese Company will be offering specials and samples. There are also great events happening at our other trail participants! Jones Family Farm is offering a Mozzarella Workshop and visitors will be able to meet the goats & get ice cream! To get the full list of activities and offerings, visit here. -10/124th Annual NYS Cask Ale Festival at Woodland Farm Brewery (Marcy) – This event features cask ales from several breweries across NYS. They have some surprises in store including authentic Franconian lagers served from anstiches and more. This even is rain or shine. Tickets are $10 for DD, $45 general admission ($50 at door) & $55 for VIP.

-10/19Mistresses and Masterpieces at MWPAI (Utica) – Immerse yourself in the passionate love of Chopin, Schuman and Liszt. Discover how these great composers were inspired by the twists and turns of their romantic lives. Mr. Siegel will connect this music to the relationships they shared. Tickets $38.

-10/27Halloween Polka at the Polish Community Club (Utica) – A day filled with fun, food, drinks, music, contests, prizes, costumes and more! Enjoy Polish cuisine, beverages, music from Tony’s Polka Band and more. Family-friendly event!

Community & Fundraising Events

-Select dates in OctoberTrain rides on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad – Trains depart from Union Station in Utica. Enjoy Beer and Wine Tasting trains as well as scenic fall foliage rides, all taking your north into the Adirondacks. -10/5Fall Festival 2019 at the Parkway Rec Center (Utica) – Enjoy this event presented by The Event Co in partnership with Tri Valley Beverages. Tri Valley will provide at least 20 tastings from several brand partners. Add in more vendors, music, some games for kids, an outdoor BBQ with a beautiful backdrop to kick off fall!

-10/5Fall Fest & The Off The Hill Challenge at the Village Green (Clinton) – Free fall food with Clinton Cider Mill, discounts and giveaways at the village shops, performances and fall activities like pumpkin painting and fun for Hamilton students and Clinton families of all ages!

-10/52019 Utica Comedy Cup Championship at Cavallos (New Hartford) – This event will showcase local up-and-coming comedians. The audience will perform and get to vote on their favorite acts. The favorite act will win $1000 and the coveted Utica Comedy Cup trophy!

-10/11The CNY Veterans Outreach Center’s 4th Annual Gala at DoubleTree Hotel Utica – All proceeds raised support the group’s holiday food program. Join for a night of food and dancing! Tickets are $100 per person or $120 per couple.

-10/12315k Fall Fundraiser at The Celtic Harp (Utica) – This low key event has transformed into a bar crawl. Sign in at The Celtic Harp, enjoy live music, drink specials and celebrate being ½ way to St. Patrick’s Day while raising money for pediatric cancer patients!

10/19 - Pumpkin Fest at The Root Farm - Visitors will be able to take in the scenery while climbing the rock tower, pick out the perfect pumpkin, get a snack from a food truck and more! Adult admission $20 and includes free access to rock climbing. Zip lines will be $10 each. Pumpkins and honey will be for sale! High ropes course also available upon reservation.

-10/19Saturday Stone Soup Kitchen Day at The Hub Eatery (Utica) – The Hub Eatery & MV Open Mic are sponsoring this event for those less fortunate in the Utica area. If you know of someone who is homeless or can’t afford a meal, or students who are struggling and need food, or a vet who is down on their luck… invite them to this event! Soup ingredient donations are being accepted.

-10/2020th Annual Chili Cook Off at Sunset Grille (Sylvan Beach) – This event benefits local children and families at Christmas with gift and food distribution by Santa’s Elves. Enter your best chili as local restaurants and residents compete in several categories. Raffles and live music!
