Sculpture Space, a Mohawk Valley cultural treasure, is unique in North America for its service to sculptors. Work made and first seen in Utica is exhibited in sculpture parks, museums and galleries all around the world. The acclaimed highly-competitive program awards professional artists two-month fellowships annually and has helped close to 500 national/ international artists from 24 countries since 1976.
Artists receive a stipend, housing, studio workspace, technical assistance and the use of specialized equipment to make art in an environment conductive to experimentation.
The public attends free open studios (June-August) during Utica Monday Nite and intriguing works-in-progress receptions throughout the year showcasing the artists’ projects and supported by local restaurants and businesses. CHAIRity and Mardi Gras are popular annual special events. School groups and others visit the studio- by appointment - to learn more about artists’ practices.
Sculpture on the grounds include a house-sized site-specific installation by Ithaca artist Ann Reichlin called Translucent Home. The campus is located two blocks from the F.X.Matt Brewery—in the ‘brewery arts district’.
Sculpture Space also develops public art projects. Area visitors are also encouraged to take a self-guided tour of Griffiss International Sculpture Garden in nearby Rome, NY. This new sculpture park, thought to be the only partnership of its kind in the country, features 19 outdoor works by Sculpture Space alumni from the US and abroad. A map, directions and information about the outdoor sculptures, including video interviews of one of the artists, may be downloaded at www.sculpturespace.org/sculptureparkwww.sculpturespace.org/sculpturepark/.
A non-profit organization with an impressive record of success, Sculpture Space performs a vital cultural role, nurturing creativity- a hallmark of civil society. It offers the public a chance to meet cutting edge contemporary artists and to learn more about creating contemporary sculpture.
