Rome's Capitol Theatre opened December 10, 1928 with an all-movie program including the feature film, “Lilac Time,†starring Colleen Moore and Gary Cooper. A member of the Kallet chain, the Capitol operated as a first-run movie house until closing in May of 1974.The theater re-opened as a performing arts venue in 1985, offering a variety of programming.
Today the 1,788 seat movie palace hosts over 100 performances each year, including concerts, live stage plays, classic movies, and special events. The Capitol still maintains its original installation Möller theater organ, using it for pre-show music and sometimes to provide live accompaniment for silent films.
The annual "Capitolfest" film festival takes place the second weekend of August and attracts classic and silent movie fans from around the world.
